You just found out that you are pregnant. The next step is telling your parents. This can be the hardest thing you’ll have to do. You worry whether they will be disappointed. You might spend hours thinking about how they are going to react. And there is also the fear of what they will feel in response to this news. But you are not the first one facing this situation. As complicated as it seems, it is something you can prepare for.

Timing is Important

You do not need to tell them as soon as you take a test and confirm that you are pregnant. It’s better to have the relevant information first. Before your conversation, come to us for a free pregnancy test and even a limited ultrasound so that you know for sure how far along you are. Our services help you know if the pregnancy is viable, how far along you may be, and give you peace of mind knowing the situation. With this information, telling them is much easier. Instead of saying “I am pregnant” and waiting for their response, you can say, “I am pregnant, and here is what I know about my situation.”

Our working hours are Tuesday to Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm. You don’t need an appointment, but scheduling ahead helps us make sure we have plenty of time set aside just for you. Everything is completely confidential.

Opening the Conversation

Practice your opening phrase. It’s not necessary for it to be flawless. You could begin with something along the lines of, “I have some important news, and it is a shock for me.” This is an honest approach and helps prepare the other person for what’s to come. Next, tell them what it is you found out in particular: “I took an at-home pregnancy test, and it came out positive.”

If they ask about the father and what your next moves are, let them know you’re not sure yet and that you have already taken a visit to a clinic for verification. Let them know you’re currently considering your options. This proves you’re taking the situation seriously and not avoiding it.

While you might fear being alone in the conversation, you could always invite a trusted adult, such as a grandparent or an aunt/uncle, to help you tell your parents about it. Even a school counselor or a nurse from the center can step in to help with the conversation if it makes you feel more supported. You shouldn’t be forced to do all of this alone.

How They May React

Your parents might react to the news with shock, rage, tears, or silence, just as you did. Don’t take their emotions as a reflection of rejection. It is essential for you to allow them some time to process their feelings, as their initial reaction doesn’t mean they’re not on your side. Most parents will eventually want to support their child once they have processed their feelings.

It’s completely understandable to feel uncertain after an unexpected pregnancy. Remember, this situation does not determine the rest of your life. You deserve compassionate support and the opportunity to make an informed decision about your future. You are still you even after that test. Going through this together is possible, and many families come out closer on the other side.

You’re Not Alone in This

After you have successfully broken your news to your parents, it’s time to take the necessary steps to create your own plan. We would be honored to help you. Our clinic has one-on-one pregnancy options counseling sessions. These sessions provide you with information about all three pregnancy options, including parenting, adoption, and abortion, without any pressure for you to choose any of them. We would love to help you understand your options and the process in detail. Our 24/7 nurse line, reached by calling 706-403-1017, is there if you need to talk after hours.

In case your talk with your family didn’t go as planned, remember that there are many other women who came to us without family support and still found a way forward. We can connect you with community resources, parenting classes, and financial support.
